I'm not all that amused by it; at least the man could acknowledge our
polite e-mails. I don't mind if he has decided that his efforts are
best spent in other directions, but blowing off honest inquiries isn't
very good form in *any* context (IMhO).

No, a miracle isn't needed. It can be reengineered if that is what is
required. But it's a shame that he's apparently not even willing to
release the source. It's the best newsreader I've ever used.
