2002.08.21 Denial of Service

At 5:51 pm yesterday the shell server went down due to a massive denial of service ("smurf") attack. The network was so flooded that not only the target (shell), but mail and web services were also periodically reduced to a crawl. We are trying to isolate the network from the attack (which is still going on). We have temporarily reassigned the shell.vex.net IP number. We regret any inconvenience.
